BlackRock Volunteers for YouthGrow

A team of volunteers from BlackRock spent the afternoon on August 18 working with Isles staff and YouthBuild students at the new YouthGrow Garden at 33 Tucker Street. The crew helped install garden bed edging with reclaimed brick and planted perennial herbs, flowers and berries.

The group was comprised of new hires in addition to a staff team leader as part of an orientation and community service program.

Look Out for Walking Loop Signs Throughout Trenton

Earlier this week, Spirit Walk walking loop signs were posted in front of 10 churches throughout Trenton. The signs include the Spirit Walk logo, Isles’ logo, the mileage of the walking loop and a map of the actual route.

The 10 locations are:

1- Shiloh Baptist Church (340 S. Howard Woodson, Jr. Way)
Distance of loop – Approximately 4/10 of a mile or 2,166.2 feet.

2 – Cadwalader Asbury United Methodist Church (900 Stuyvesant Ave)
Distance of loop – Approximately 5/10 of a mile or 2,854.1 feet.

3 – Friendship Baptist Church (111 Perry St)
Distance of loop – Approximately 6/10 of a mile or 3,294 feet.

4 – Christ Episcopal Church (331 Hamilton Ave)
Distance of loop – Approximately 6/10 of a mile or 3,489.6 feet.

5 – Grace Baptist and Perfecting Saints Church and Trinity Cathedral (700 W. State St and 801 W. State St)
Distance of loop – Approximately 8/10 of a mile or 4,397 feet.

6 – Galilee Baptist Church (440 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd)

Congratulations to IYI’s Cycle 15 Graduating Class!

In June, 14 IYI students graduated – 8 with a high school diploma and 6 with a GED:

(1) 50% of our graduates have been accepted and will attend college as early this summer with
majors consisting of Performing Arts, Culinary
Arts, Architecture, Engineering, Business, and Health Sciences.

(2) 35% of the graduating class currently have internships that will extend until end of the year.

(3) 10% of our graduates have obtained employment, both part and full time.

Vote for Isles’ Mill One Farm project in the Nature’s Path Gardens For Good Grant Contest!

The five submissions with the most votes will go before a selection committee, and two will win:

A $10,000 grant to be used toward the cost of planting an organic garden in their community in 2010.

Coaching from Organic Gardening magazine to help establish the garden, including technical assistance with design and technical assistance and guidance to build it (estimated value: $5,000).

An organic breakfast fundraising event and garden dedication hosted by Nature’s Path to raise funds for the winning organization. Nature’s Path will provide free breakfast at the event and give away reusable shopping bags (estimated value: $10,000).

Marty and Liz Johnson will be Honored at The Passage Theatre Gala

Marty and Liz Johnson will be honored along side Trenton poet Doc Long at Passage Theatre’s annual gala on June 12 at the Masonic Temple (100 North Willow Street, Trenton, NJ).

The event will be a Harlem Rent Party featuring a five piece jazz ensemble (the Collection of Brothers), instructions in the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, a silent auction, Bumpy Johnson numbers and more. Period dress is encouraged, but is not required.

Tickets are $75. To order tickets, please contact Kacy at kacy@passagetheatre.org.

Parking will be available at Front Street garage.

Princeton Varsity Club Releases 2010 Weapons of Mass Construction Video

On April 18th, over 130 members of the Princeton Athletics family spent the day working with the Princeton Varsity Club and Isles on the construction of a quarter-acre garden at Isles’ training center at 33 Tucker Street as part of “Weapons of Mass Construction.”

Isles and the Trenton Historic Development Collaborative Receive Grant from the Wachovia Regional Foundation

Isles, in partnership with the Trenton Historic Development Collaborative, received an $85,000 planning grant from the Wachovia Regional Foundation, to help create a comprehensive neighborhood plan for the Calhoun St. Corridor.
