Where is the most dangerous place to be in a typical older city
like Trenton? In your home!
Children suffer most from indoor environmental hazards — lead in the dust, dust mites, rodents, cockroaches, mold that trigger asthma, and toxic pesticides.
Who better then to find these hazards and bring in remedies
than community residents trained by Isles to be “Healthy Home” inspectors. After these trained community workers go door to
door and document hazards, Isles will:
- Educate families about the dangers of lead and other toxins.
- Inform them of their rights and remedies under the new
Lead Hazard Control Assistance Act. - Help them report hazards to landlords and government enforcement agencies.
- Encourage lead screening for their children.
- Offer follow-up counseling and advice on how to clean their homes or move to cleaner places.
Isles also educates the broader community on the dangers of lead exposure for children and its possible effects on their learning and behavior — by educating and distributing lead testing kits through Isles’ trained lead sampling technicians. Where possible, counselors refer owners and landlords to the New Jersey Lead Hazard Control Program for loans and grants to make homes lead-safe.
