High School Education

IYI ClassroomIYI’s students earn their high school diplomas through a partnership with the Trenton Board of Education’s Daylight/Twilight High School. Certified teachers instruct all academic classes, and the student/teacher ratio of 15:1
enhances relationships and allows for personalized attention.

Students typically attend IYI for two to three years before graduating. IYI operates year round, but starts classes in September to align with the standard school year. Students
can participate in Trenton High School’s graduation, prom, sports and other extracurricular activities.

Features of IYI include:

  • A curriculum developed by the Trenton school system’s curriculum specialists in consultation with Isles’ staff; it targets non-traditional students who earn credits toward their diplomas in core history/language arts, science, math, and English courses.
  • Advanced academics for students who qualify to work independently.
  • A “100 Book Challenge” requiring students read books daily and answer comprehension questions to bolster their literacy.
  • A personal essay that students write, based on their own life stories, to enhance literacy skills.
  • Credits for specialized courses approved by the Board of Education.
  • Tutoring in math, English, High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA), and SAT-prep for students with low basic skills. Special needs math and English tutoring is available for students testing below grade level.
  • For students with an Individual Education Plan, analysis of student profiles and past achievements by academic instructors guide class selection and teaching level and help assess results.

The Test of Adult Basic Education is administered when students enter IYI to help teachers gauge grade level and math/reading proficiency, and at the end of the year to track educational gains.
