From July 14-Augst 13, 2021, Isles Youth Services hosted various summer youth activities which included fitness, music, spoken word, and more.  These free activities were offered during after school hours, and included both in-house and virtual events.  Our partners at United Front Trenton helped support and facilitate these activities and participated in these weekly events.  Here what some youth leaders from United Front had to say about the program:

“I am so grateful to have been a part of the amazing experience that was Love, Peace and Joy. I learned lots of skills ranging from how to deal with my emotions with Mr. Edu’s emotional fitness class, to learning how to speak up and have my voice heard with Kimmie Carlos. I even think introducing Lt. Stokes at the beginning of the program has helped me become less nervous about public speaking. The escape room was wonderful because it helped me work together with my team. My favorite workshop was Art and Soul. This workshop reminded me of how fun it is to just sit down and let your art express yourself. Each speaker really spoke into my soul and this experience is something I will never forget. Each lesson I learned will help guide me through college and beyond.”

Yenifer M., class of ’22

“My time during the program was an eye-opener of life lessons for the future I can use, especially for college. Every time we use our voice it gives us a chance to change people’s perspective and when you present your idea you explain it well enough for them to get an understanding. Overall, the workshop gave me wisdom for not only myself but to share with others.”

Zanobia S., Class of ’22

Emotional Fitness

This workshop focuses on how people deal with conflict. One way to measure a person’s EMOTIONAL FITNESS is to pay close attention to how they resolve conflict. Are they direct, balanced, and fair? Are they excitable, contentious, or playing victim inordinately? Do they take responsibility or blame most times? We will increase their emotional intelligence, and decrease destructive stress coping mechanisms. Participants will explore how to resolve conflict effectively using:

-EMOTIONAL LITERACY
-EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
-EMOTIONAL VOCABULARY
-EMOTIONAL DEMONSTRATION

Art and Soul

Isles Youth Services is hosting painting classes at the Art & Soul Studio (directions here) on August 26 and August 27 at 3 PM.  These classes are part of our Love, Peace & Joy Summer Enrichment program geared towards youth in the Trenton Area.  Young artists will be taught by studio owner Mrs. Princis Lewis, and will be painting portraits of African Americans from past and present who have made major contributions to the world.

To sign up for this event please reach out to Stacy Heading at [email protected] or at 609-341-4751.
