Social Profit Center at Mill One

Why the Social Profit Center at Mill One matters

The Social Profit Center is part of Isles’ comprehensive approach to creating environments where everyone can grow and thrive. Safe and flourishing communities need strong organizations working together to address interconnected challenges. By transforming a vacant mill into affordable, collaborative space, we support sustainable communities in multiple ways: preserving historic architecture, creating green infrastructure, providing affordable workspace, and fostering the collaboration that strengthens community impact. The organizations at Mill One work across education, health, housing, environment, and social justice, addressing the full range of services that help communities thrive. By bringing these groups together in one space, we help challenge and change the systems that create inequity while building the collaborative relationships that make lasting change possible.

A collaborative space for community impact

The Social Profit Center at Mill One provides affordable, high-performing office, training, conference, and flexible space to nonprofits, social impact businesses, and artists in a restored historic textile mill. By bringing together community-based organizations, researchers, policy activists, philanthropists, and artists in one environmentally efficient space, we create opportunities for collaboration that strengthen community impact.

What the Social Profit Center offers

In 2006, Isles faced a familiar challenge for growing social impact organizations: we had outgrown our office and training facilities. Instead of simply finding a larger place, we asked a different question: What if we could acquire and restore a large, vacant, threatened historic factory in a challenged community, invite similar-minded groups to co-locate with us, and create shared green technology, conference space, and idea incubators?

Many organizations we partnered with felt isolated and relied on poor quality facilities. We believed we could strengthen our impact and the outcomes of other important organizations by creating a Social Profit Center.

Encouraged by the experience of the Nonprofit Centers Network of North America, Isles acquired the former Atlantic Products Mill on the Trenton-Hamilton border. Located directly on the busy Northeast Corridor rail line, this former historic textile mill fell into disrepair and became mostly vacant in the 1980s. Isles saw an opportunity to transform this building and surrounding community while supporting at least 35 organizations and artists.

The 75,000 square foot Social Profit Center features environmentally efficient design with solar panels, a green roof, LED lighting, daylight harvesting, and high-efficiency heating and cooling that ensures permanent affordability for members.

The challenge

Social impact organizations often struggle with expensive, poor-quality facilities that limit their ability to serve communities effectively. Many nonprofits, social enterprises, and artists work in isolation, missing opportunities for collaboration that could strengthen their impact. Meanwhile, vacant historic buildings in urban areas deteriorate, representing lost community assets and potential.
